Innovating English Language Instruction

In January 2007, a group of educators at Teachers College, Columbia University began investigating the pedagogical potential of state-of-the-art technologies in the English Second Language (ESL) classroom.

Working in partnership with the Collaborative Solutions Group, the team began redesigning their practices, incorporating Web 2.0 principles and technologies to transform the curriculum and their classroom instruction. The result was TESOL 2.0, an integrated approach to media and technology in the ESL classroom.

The TESOL 2.0 methodology has been employed in an advanced-level Community Language Program class and shared at the Winter NYSTESOL Applied Linguistics conference, the 2007 NYSTESOL Annual Conference, and the 33rd JALT International Conference. Feedback from students, teachers, and researchers has been overwhelmingly positive. In May 2007, the Teachers College TESOL and Applied Linguistics programs awarded TESOL 2.0 the John Fanselow Award for curricular innovation.

TESOL 2.0 is as an ideal curriculum for language teachers who wish to more effectively incorporate new media and technology into their classrooms. It serves as a much-needed modernization of the pedagogical implementation of video, computers, and the Internet. Moreover, TESOL 2.0 reflects the current reality our students experience in an increasingly digital world, which has given birth to new avenues of utilizing language for communicative purposes.

The CSG is continuing to work with the TESOL 2.0 team to develop professional development opportunities around this instructional approach. To learn more about TESOL 2.0 or to participate in the TESOL 2.0 Summer Scholar in Residence Program contact us.
